Finding Wisdom – Psalm 19

The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. (Psalm 19:7b NIV)

We all need wisdom. No matter how smart we are, no matter how much we know, no matter how much experience we have, we don’t always know what to do or what to say or how to respond when we’re faced with life’s challenges. But God does; and He has given us access to His infinite wisdom via His Word.

King David tells us that “The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.” We can trust the Bible because we can trust God. God’s Word will never lead us astray or let us down because God will never lead us astray or let us down.

Perhaps the biggest challenge to accessing God’s wisdom is that it requires humility. We don’t like to think of ourselves as “simple;” but in comparison to God, that’s exactly what we are. When we approach the Bible with the recognition that God is God and we are not, we’ll find the wisdom that we’re seeking.

Refresh Your Soul – Psalm 19

The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. (Psalm 19:7a NIV)

Do you ever feel drained? You’re grateful that you have a job, but its challenges wear you out. You love your family, but caring for them saps your physical and emotional energy. Sometimes we feel like living is sucking the life out of us. When living in a broken world wears you down, where can you go to refresh your soul?

David was ancient Israel’s greatest king. As a leader of millions of people, many of whom didn’t always appreciate him, David knew the meaning of fatigue. In Psalm 19:7 David wrote, “The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul.” In the midst of the daily challenges he faced, David found his source of restoration in the Bible.

We enjoy giving presents to our friends and loved ones. God delights to give, too. Although we may not often think about Christmas from God’s perspective, we shouldn’t be surprised that He finds joy in giving Himself to us, because our God is a generous God.

The Focus of Our Joy

On Christmas morning children all over the world will wake up and head for the Christmas tree. They’ll eagerly open their presents and then burst into expressions of happiness. Most will remember to thank their parents and others who gave them their gifts. Then they’ll turn their focus back to their new toys, games, clothes, candy, books, and whatever else they received.
